KUCHING: Sarawak is set to receive two major investments from Australian companies, with billion-dollar projects focusing on green magnesium and hydrogen energy.

President of the Sarawak Australia Business Chamber (SABC), Rodger Chan Siong Boh, shared the news in a recent Facebook post, expressing his enthusiasm for the projects.

According to Chan, discussions with the green magnesium company have taken place both in Australia and Sarawak, involving top leaders such as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, and Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

One of the key investments comes from Australian global metal mining giant, Fortescue, which has committed to developing a green hydrogen alternative energy project in Bintulu.

Anwar recently confirmed this agreement after a meeting with Fortescue’s executive chairman and founder, Andrew Forrest AO, during the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Summit 2025 in Davos, Switzerland on Jan 20.

“The Sarawak government has agreed in principle, and I have guaranteed several incentives and support so that Bintulu will become a hub,” Anwar said in a press conference at the conclusion of his working visit to WEF 2025.

Meanwhile, SABC representatives, including Chan,Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, and SABC secretary general Jonathan Ngu, recently attended the Australia Day celebration at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, hosted by the Australian High Commission.

The delegation also engaged with key Australian officials, including the Australian High Commissioner, Deputy High Commissioner, Western Australia Trade Commissioner, and New South Wales Trade Officer, further strengthening business ties between Sarawak and Australia.
