MUKAH: Two local men were arrested for suspected trespassing, attempted theft and possession of a dangerous weapon at a house along Jalan Kampung Bunut here, today (Mar 28).

Mukah police chief DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias said the suspects, aged 22 and 25, were initially spotted acting suspiciously near an unoccupied house at about 11 pm.

“The suspects fled into a nearby forest after their presence was noticed by villagers,” he said in a statement.

He said both men later reappeared at about 4 am, heading towards a motorcycle believed to belong to them, with one of them seen carrying a sharp weapon.

Villagers managed to detain the suspects before police arrived at the scene and made the arrests.

Police also seized a knife believed to be used in the incident.

Initial investigations found the suspects had attempted to break into the vacant house to commit theft.

“One of the suspects has seven previous records related to criminal and drug offences,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Sections 447 and 379/511 of the Penal Code, as well as Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.

Both suspects are expected to be brought before the Mukah Magistrates’ Court tomorrow (Mar 29) for a remand application.
