PADAWAN: Police have arrested two local men with prior criminal records for their alleged involvement in a cable theft case along Jalan Nanas Barat on Wednesday.
Padawan Police Chief, Supt Mohd Irwan Hafiz Md Radzi, said the suspects, aged 34 and 47, were detained by the Lejang Task Force at around 5:30 pm.
During the raid, police managed to seize three rolls of cable, several cable-cutting tools and two cars believed to have been used in the theft.
“Preliminary investigations found that both suspects are believed to be actively engaged in cable theft activities around Kuching and Padawan.
“Police believe that there are more individuals involved in the syndicate and efforts are underway to locate them,” he said.
Background checks found that both men had prior records related to drug and theft offences.
He added that the suspects had been remanded to facilitate investigations under Section 431A of the Penal Code.
Upon conviction, the offence provides for imprisonment of up to five years, a fine, or both.
Irwan assured that police would intensify operations against cable theft, which not only causedheavy losses to utility companies but also disrupted public facilities.
