SIBU: Police arrested two local men with multiple prior records in connection with an armed robbery at a hair salon along Jalan Chambers late Monday night (Aug 18).
The incident occurred at around 11 pm when one of the suspects, armed with an object resembling a pistol, threatened the complainant and a friend inside the premises.
Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the suspect pointed the object at the forehead of the complainant’s friend and ordered them to hand over their valuables.
Fearing for their safety, they surrendered two smartphones before the suspect fled. No injuries were reported in the incident.
“Acting on information and intelligence, police detained two men, aged between 25 and 44, at around 10.30 am the following day (Aug 19).
“Background checks showed that both suspects have prior records involving robbery, theft, drugs, and impersonating public officials. The first suspect has 11 prior records, while the second has five,” he said.
Police also seized an imitation pistol grip, the victims’ two smartphones, and a multipurpose knife.
Zulkipli said both suspects have been remanded for seven days until Aug 27 to facilitate investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code for armed gang robbery, which carries imprisonment for a term of up to 20 years and whipping, upon conviction.
