PADAWAN: Two unemployed men were arrested for their alleged involvement in an attempted theft case that went viral on social media.
Three more suspects, including a foreign man, were also detained during a follow-up operation in Batu Kawa.
Padawan police chief Supt Barry William said the district Task Force raided two houses in RPR Batu Kawa yesterday (Aug 3) as part of investigations into the attempted theft case.
The suspects, aged 28 and 32, admitted to their involvement in the attempted theft, and the case is being investigated under Section 379 read together with Section 511 of the Penal Code.
“Background checks found that the younger suspect has prior criminal and drug-related records, including robbery and offences under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
“He also allegedly confessed to being linked to another theft case currently under police investigation,” he said.
Aside from that, the operation also led to the arrest of a 39-year-old unemployed Indonesian man, a 45-year-old labourer and a 40-year-old unemployed woman.
Investigations found that the Indonesian suspect admitted to being in the country without valid identification documents and to abusing drugs.
Meanwhile, the labourer and the unemployed woman were referred to the district Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (NCID) for urine screening after admitting to drug abuse.
Barry said both tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine before being released on police bail pending further action.
The suspected thieves and the Indonesian man were remanded at Tabuan Jaya police lock-up to facilitate further investigations.
No items were seized during the operation.
