DUBAI, United Arab Emirates: Two Sarawak Para Badminton athletes, Ashley Irenaeus Jeck and Nurzammietul Syafiqqah Mohamad Zamberi, made their international debut representing Malaysia at the Sixth Fazza Dubai Para Badminton International 2025.

The tournament, held from May 9 to 11 at the Dubai Club for People of Determination, was part of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Para Badminton International series, which gathered top para athletes from across the world to compete in a showcase of sporting excellence, inclusivity and resilience.

Ashley and Nurzammietul’s participation marks a significant milestone for Sarawak’s para sports development, and is a source of pride for the state.

They were among 14 national athletes accompanied by three coaches at the event.

During her official visit to the tournament, Sarawak’s Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, praised the athletes’ achievements and determination.

“The success of our Sarawak para athletes on the international stage is a reflection of their resilience, discipline and unwavering spirit.

“Our ministry remains fully committed to empowering persons with disabilities through inclusive development programs, access to opportunities, and strong community support,” she said in a statement.

Fatimah mentioned that the athletes are not only sporting heroes but also symbols of what can be achieved when someone believes in ability over limitation.

“I believe their achievements will inspire more young Sarawakians, especially those living with disabilities, to pursue their dreams confidently, knowing that their communities and country stand behind them,” said Fatimah.
