BINTULU: Large-scale fruit plantations should be supported with processing plants to ensure produce is prepared for commercial markets, says Head of State, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

He made the suggestion during a visit to the Sungai Sebiew Agriculture Training Centre today, accompanied by his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.

They were welcomed by Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, and his wife, Datin Seri Loreta Sawot, along with Deputy Minister, Datuk Martin Ben, and senior officials.

On arrival, the Head of State and his wife planted Musang King and Blackthorn durian trees to mark the occasion.

They also received a briefing by the Department of Agriculture’s Director, Dominic Chunggat, on the 391-hectare centre, which has hosted crop and livestock programmes since 1972.

Among initiatives highlighted were the Precision Farming Park, Permanent Food Production Park, and modern agricultural training programmes.

Before departing, Wan Junaidi and Fauziah joined a luncheon where they sampled local fruits, including the popular ‘durian isu’.

They expressed appreciation to Dr Rundi for the invitation and hospitality extended throughout the visit.
