KUCHING: Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi are set to grace the 2026 New Year Countdown celebration at Kuching Waterfront tomorrow (Dec 31).

The rehearsal for the countdown, held at the main stage of the celebration venue last night (Dec 29), was reported to have run smoothly as final preparations entered their last phase.

Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister, who is also Minister-in-Charge of the celebration, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah was present during the rehearsal to oversee preparations, including artist performances, fireworks displays and other scheduled programmes.

When met by the media, Abdul Karim said organisers had informed him that preparations were progressing smoothly without any issues.

“We think that if the weather is good, in addition to performances by well-known artists, there could be tens of thousands of people gathering at the Waterfront,” he said.

Abdul Karim also urged members of the public attending the countdown celebration to carpool and park their vehicles further away from the Kuching Waterfront to help ease traffic congestion.

The 2026 New Year’s Eve celebration will feature leading Indonesian artist Judika, Malaysian singer Dayang Nurfaizah, as well as other invited and local artistes.

The programme will also include a laser fireworks display, a fireworks show, and a special performance set to be recorded in the Guinness World Records.
