WASHINGTON, United States (US): Rivian Automotive and Uber Technologies said on Thursday that Uber will invest up to USD1.25 billion (RM5.8 billion) in Rivian through 2031 to support the deployment of a fully autonomous fleet of Rivian R2 robotaxis, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

The vehicles will be available exclusively on the Uber platform. The agreement includes an initial investment of USD300 million (RM1.395 billion).

Uber is expected to purchase 10,000 fully autonomous R2 robotaxis, with an option to acquire up to 40,000 more from 2030.

The partnership aims to deploy an initial fleet of 10,000 robotaxis in its first phase, with operations set to begin in San Francisco and Miami in 2028.

The companies plan to expand the service to thousands of unsupervised R2 robotaxis across 25 cities in the US, Canada and Europe by the end of 2031. – BERNAMA-dpa
