Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the initiative aligns with Sarawak’s tourism agenda by promoting authentic culinary experiences and sustainable tourism through digital storytelling.
“‘Off-Grid Cooking’ is more than just a cooking show. It is a strategic storytelling platform that has the potential to position Sarawak on the global map as a unique destination for culinary and eco-tourism.
“Through digital platforms, such initiatives can reach international audiences, inspire travel, and create greater awareness of what Sarawak has to offer.
“I am confident that UCSI University will continue to play a key role in this journey, contributing to talent development, innovation and the promotion of Sarawak as a world-class tourism destination,” he said, adding that the collaboration between academia and industry is crucial in strengthening tourism development.
He said this in his speech during the Celebration of UCSI University’s Top 50 ranking in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 (Hospitality and Leisure Management) and the launch of ‘Off-Grid Cooking’ show here at the university today (April 18).
Meanwhile, UCSI University Sarawak Campus Pro Vice-Chancellor, Mukvinder Kaur Sandhu, said that the six-episode series brings audiences into an immersive off-the-grid cooking experience set in nature, celebrating not only food but also the beauty and authenticity of Sarawak’s natural attractions
She added that the project was made possible through collaboration with MUSC Food Industries Sdn Bhd, demonstrating strong industry linkages and the university’s commitment to impactful, creative initiatives.
“More importantly, it highlights how education can extend far beyond the classroom in truly meaningful and transformative ways.
“We will continue to strengthen our partnerships and create even greater impact for our students, the industry, and ultimately the state,” she added.
Additionally, the Dean of the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Assoc. Prof. Christopher Wan, said that the faculty’s global recognition is a proud moment for the faculty and a reflection of the collective efforts of its academic community and industry partners.
“The ‘Off-Grid Cooking’ series further exemplifies our innovative approach to education, where we integrate culture, sustainability and real-world experiences into our academic ecosystem,” he said.
The series will be published every Saturday at 12:00 pm on UCSI’s social media platforms for six consecutive weeks.
