BELAGA: The Uma Daro Liling Padong (UDLP) community recently crafted a creative Sarawak flag display using 880 recycled bottles.
The project not only highlights their innovative, sustainable, and patriotic spirit for the 2025 Sarawak Day Celebration but also serves as their entry in the 2025 Anugerah Desa Madani (ADM).
Belaga assemblyman Datuk Liwan Lagang said the effort reflects the deep love the residents have for Sarawak alongside their concern for environmental preservation.
“Their innovation in creating a replica of the Sarawak flag is truly impressive and reflects their love and loyalty to the state.
“The effort to beautify and maintain the cleanliness of the longhouse environment deserves attention as it creates a healthy atmosphere while instilling cleanliness values in the younger generation.
“Education begins at home with the family. This is also a form of patriotism. Congratulations and well done to the mothers of UDLP,” he said.
Meanwhile, UDLP Women’s Bureau chief Alice Laing said the process of producing the replica took nearly a week, beginning with collecting, cleaning, and coloring the bottles according to the official colors of the Sarawak flag before arranging them into a large-scale structure.
“We chose to use recycled plastic bottles as the main material to prove that items often regarded as waste actually have great potential when utilised creatively.
“Apart from enlivening the Sarawak Day celebration, this initiative also serves as an educational platform for the community on the importance of recycling practices,” she explained.
She added that the effort also contributes to informal education among residents, especially the younger generation, encouraging greater awareness of environmental care and instilling a love for the state.
