MIRI: A Sarawak United Peoples’ Party leader has urged the federal government to immediately recognise the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).

SUPP Piasau Branch Publicity Secretary, Tan Lek Jin, said the UEC recognition is longstanding in that it has been repeatedly delayed for political reasons.

“The UEC curriculum and examination standards are widely recognised by universities worldwide,” he said, adding that it is a fact which remains indisputable.

In a press statement on Wednesday, Tan criticised attempts to obscure the policy issue by stirring racial emotions, describing such tactics as reckless and damaging to students’ educational prospects.

Towards this end he condemned the continued politicisation of race in education issues, warning of serious consequences for national unity.

“Manipulating racial sentiments is irresponsible, harms students’ futures, erodes public trust, and contradicts inclusive, equitable governance,” he said.

He said such deliberate narratives have already caused tangible harm to social stability, urging political actors to immediately stop exploiting sensitive racial issues in the country.

He called for decisive leadership and a clear federal policy decision to officially recognise UEC without further political manoeuvring.

In this respect, Tan said recognising the UEC would not threaten the national education system nor infringe upon any community’s rights.

Instead, he said UEC recognition would help retain talent, enhance Malaysia’s global competitiveness, and reflect the country’s true diversity and inclusiveness.

Tan added that the Madani government must translate commitments into concrete actions, stressing that rhetoric alone will not restore public confidence.

He also expressed appreciation to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg for continued funding support for Chinese education.

Tan said Abang Johari’s pragmatic leadership proves plural education systems can coexist harmoniously, providing a practical reference for federal policymakers.
