CHENGDU, Sichuan, China: A Sarawak delegation led by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas is on a working visit to Chengdu, Sichuan Province, to strengthen technical expertise in infrastructure development.
Uggah, who is also Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, said the visit was part of efforts to enhance regional connectivity under the Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
He said Sarawak’s focus was on adapting best practices for road, bridge and tunnel construction in terrains similar to those found in highland and peatland areas.
“This visit has given us valuable insights into techniques used in regions with geographical challenges comparable to Sarawak, including Bario Highlands, Baram, Lawas and Sebuyau.
“As we expand connectivity into highland and remote regions, our approach must remain responsible, ensuring progress goes hand in hand with environmental care and community well-being,” he said in a statement.
The delegation was received by the Chairman of China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) Southwestern Headquarters, Chen Ning, and the Chairman of CCCC International, Shi Yingtao, who shared the company’s global experience in large-scale infrastructure projects.
CCCC, which has operated in Malaysia for over 30 years, has completed more than 90 projects nationwide.
In Sarawak, it built the Jambatan Taib Mahmud in Jepak and is currently involved in the Miri Port Training Bund and Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) 2 projects.
During the visit, the delegation also observed major expressway projects in Sichuan, including the Ya’an-Kanding and Ya’an-Xichang Expressways, which use tunnels and elevated roadways to minimise ecological impact.
Uggah said Sarawak’s infrastructure development would continue to uphold the pillars of inclusivity, sustainability and prosperity as outlined in PCDS 2030.
The working visit will also include engagements with local authorities in Sichuan to learn about project planning, monitoring and policy implementation practices.
