BARCELONA, Spain: The Sarawak government is positioning itself as a leader in digital innovation by ensuring that smart technology continues to drive economic growth, sustainability, and greater opportunities for its people.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said that strategic partnerships would shape the future of Sarawak’s digital economy, marking another milestone in the government’s commitment to collaboration, innovation, and progress.

He said that the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) has collaborated with Huawei on various projects to advance Sarawak’s digital transformation, particularly in the development of smart cities.

“One of the key initiatives resulting from this strategic partnership is the Kuching Smart City Master Plan, aimed at enhancing urban life through the integration of digital technology.

“This collaboration has laid the foundation for a more connected and efficient city ecosystem, leveraging innovations in connectivity, data analytics, and smart infrastructure to improve public services and overall quality of life.

“Building on this strong foundation, the latest Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will accelerate Sarawak’s digital transformation through expanded connectivity, infrastructure modernisation, artificial intelligence (AI) development, enhanced data capabilities, and digital talent expansion,” he said.

He said this during the MoU signing ceremony between the Sarawak government and Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2025 recently.

Uggah added that this strategic partnership would also expand wireless connectivity to suburban and rural areas, ensuring that no one is left behind in Sarawak’s digital transformation.

Furthermore, he explained that the collaboration would modernise transmission networks to create scalable and intelligent infrastructure, supporting the rapid adoption of 5G technology and future innovations.

“This MoU will advance AI development by building the necessary infrastructure, fostering research, and creating AI solutions that reflect Sarawak’s unique needs and identity.

“In addition, the collaboration will establish state-of-the-art data storage centres, enabling secure data exchange and the creation of digital products to drive economic growth and digital competitiveness,” he said.

At the same time, he stressed that the MoU would also strengthen digital talent development, equipping Sarawak’s workforce with skills in AI, Big Data, IoT, and immersive technology to support Sarawak’s digital economy ambitions.

“I hope that with this MoU, we can build a better future for the people of Sarawak – one that is more connected, inclusive, and full of new possibilities,” he said.
