SARAWAKIANS are reminded to be wary of individuals promoting “ideas” and “professional opinions” online, as these commentators may profit from attention while potentially undermining the trust and unity within the community.
Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, said the international recognition and successes Sarawak enjoys today are the fruits of the culture of tolerance, peace and mutual respect.
“But let us also be mindful. Times are changing. And with success comes attention, not all of it supportive.
“Our unity in Malaysia, and especially in Sarawak, is sacred. We must not fall prey to negativity, incitement, misinformation, or provocations by external forces seeking to divide us.
“As the saying goes, ‘Air yang tenang jangan disangka tiada buaya’ (still waters run deep),” he said in his ministerial winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.
Uggah, who is also Deputy Premier, further said those spreading ‘ideas’ and ‘professional opinions’ may sound entertaining, or gain listeners, followers and subscribers.
“But we may risk losing something far more precious: trust among ourselves, respect for one another, and the love that holds our communities together.
“Let us not fall into their trap. Let us reject these divisive antics and instead continue moving forward, together, especially in these uncertain times,” he said.
He added that Sarawak has lived in harmony for generations, and this peace must be protected for future generations.
“Unity is the backbone of our development agenda, the foundation of our sustainability, and the key to achieving our long-term goals.
“With unity, no one can stop us. With unity, we can achieve far more. With unity, we will build a prosperous, safe, and cohesive Sarawak, where no one is left behind,” said Uggah.
