KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sarawak brought the spirit of Ramadan to life by celebrating 55 asnaf beneficiaries during its Iftar Perdana last night (Mar 21).

The event also saw generous financial contributions from several organisations, reinforcing UiTM Sarawak’s commitment to supporting its community.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg was represented by Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi.

UiTM Sarawak Rector Prof Dr Firdaus Abdullah expressed hope that the contributions would help ease the burden of students, staff, and asnaf in celebrating the upcoming Syawal.

“This also reflects UiTM Sarawak’s commitment to fostering the spirit of giving and sharing,” he said in his welcoming speech.

During the event, a total of 20 underprivileged students from the campus received RM150 each, while 20 asnaf staff members were given RM200 each.

It also celebrated 10 asnaf individuals, who are new reverts from Kampung Plaie, each receiving RM200.

Additionally, five single mothers were provided with RM150 each.

The assistance was funded through UiTM Sarawak’s Unit Zakat dan Wakaf (ZAWAF), with the Tabung Zakat supporting student aid, the Tabung Sedekah assisting staff and Kampung Plaie recipients, and the Persatuan Wanita Universiti Teknologi MARA (PEWANI) contributing to single mothers.

Beyond direct aid distribution, the event also included significant financial donations to UiTM Sarawak.

Yayasan Bank Rakyat (YBR) contributed RM100,000 as Bantuan Awal Pengajian (BAP), presented by its chief executive officer Syaiful Rizal Abdul Ghani.

Maybank Islamic Berhad donated RM115,105 to UiTM Sarawak’s Tabung Zakat, handed over by Sarawak Regional Director, Abang Jamili Abang Julai.

Rafulin Holdings Sdn Bhd contributed RM75,450 to the Tabung Zakat, represented by its Sarawak Branch Manager Ivy Molly Luhat, on behalf of Managing Director, Datuk Mohamed Raffe Chekku.

More than 400 attendees, including students, university staff, and invited guests, gathered for the event.

It began with iftar (breaking of fast), followed by Maghrib prayers, the aid presentation, and concluded with Isyak, Tarawih prayers, and ‘moreh’ (post-prayer supper).
