KUCHING: Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s (UKM) Faculty of Law and Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on research and development, particularly in Sarawak.

The MoU was signed by UKM Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation Affairs, Datuk Wan Kamal Mujani, and Sarawak Metro Chief Executive Officer, Mazli Mustaffa, in a ceremony on Friday (Feb 21).

Witnessing the signing were Sarawak Metro’s Director of Legal and Company Secretary, Bibi Waheeda Arman Khan, and UKM’s Law Faculty Dean, Rasyikah Md Khalid.

Commenting on the agreement, Wan Kamal expressed hope that the collaboration would contribute to enhancing Malaysia’s justice system, legislation, and policies related to autonomous vehicles.

“Through this partnership, more opportunities will emerge for collaboration in research, education, and professional development.

“Moreover, this cooperation not only supports the Ministry of Higher Education’s agenda to strengthen strategic partnerships but also contributes to the development of a legal framework for smart and sustainable cities,” he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Mazli hoped that both organisations would translate ideas into practical solutions to ensure sustainable progress.

“I am confident that our partnership is a step towards creating real impact — not just for our organisations but also for Sarawak’s transport industry and the wider community,” he said.

He also emphasised that the MoU symbolised more than just a formal agreement, as it underscored Sarawak Metro’s and UKM’s shared commitment to bridging academic knowledge with industry expertise.

“I truly believe that today’s signing marks the beginning of a meaningful collaboration focused on advancing research, education, and innovation,” he added.
