KUCHING: The Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (UKPS) will intensify efforts to strengthen state security and disaster preparedness.

This follows the directive of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who emphasised the agency’s role as an early responder.

UKPS Director, Abdul Wahab Rahim, said the matter was among the focus highlighted during his courtesy visit to the Premier, where he briefed him on the agency’s progress and future plans.

“The Premier has requested UKPS to reinforce its security components. While the security division has already been established, it needs to be further enhanced, including preparedness for crises and disasters.

“In future, we will undertake more rescue operations. We already have sea operations, but for floods and landslides, we will assess and respond accordingly,” he said to reporters after the courtesy call at Satria Pertiwi Complex here today.

He said UKPS is also working to strengthen safety measures by increasing trained volunteers in high-risk areas and empowering communities to serve as frontliners during emergencies.

“UKPS will also introduce three new vessels, each 40 metres long and capable of week-long operations, to improve security coverage in strategic areas,” he said.

He added that the Premier has instructed UKPS to digitise its services, including adopting modern technology for data analysis, early warning systems, and improved risk and safety management.

“These enhancements will bolster the effectiveness of both agency and community responses during disasters,” Abdul Wahab said.
