KUCHING: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Sarawak has taken action against three Indonesian fishing boats suspected of illegal fishing in Malaysian waters.

According to Director of MMEA Sarawak, First Admiral Maritime Kamal Ariffin Jusoh, the vessels were apprehended during patrol operations conducted by the KM Tun Fatimah approximately 156 nautical miles north of Tanjung Po.

“Upon inspection, eight crew members, aged between 22 to 62 years, were found onboard the vessels. It was discovered that the boats lacked registration numbers and originated from Indonesia. Additionally, none of the crew members possessed valid identification documents.

“The detained crew, along with their vessels and catch, were escorted to the Maritime Complex Jetty Tun Abang Salahuddin (KOMTAS) for further investigation. They will be dealt with under relevant sections of the Fisheries Act 1985 and the Immigration Act 1959/63,” he said.

The total value of the seized items was estimated to exceed RM1 million.

MMEA reaffirms its commitment to enforcing maritime laws and ensuring the protection of Malaysian waters. Strict action will be taken against any foreign vessels found engaging in fishing activities without proper authorisation.

For the reporting of misconduct, criminal activities, or maritime emergencies, the public is urged to contact the Malaysian Maritime Operations Center Sarawak at 082-432544 or MERS 999 for immediate assistance.
