KUCHING: An underage motorcyclist and the pillion rider were detained after attempting to ram through a roadblock during an operation by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) along Jalan Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Rahman Yakub last night.

The incident occurred when both teenagers tried to flee the scene after being instructed to stop by JPJ enforcement officers during the Ops Motosikal No. 2/2025.

JPJ Sarawak said it takes the incident seriously, especially since it involved an underage rider.

“The reckless act was not only dangerous to the teens themselves but also posed a significant risk to enforcement personnel and other road users,” it said in a statement.

In response, the department said it had instructed the parents or guardians of the teenagers to be summoned for an interview, and further action will be taken in accordance with the provisions of the applicable law.

“JPJ Sarawak also urged that all, particularly parents and guardians, to take a more active role in educating and monitoring their children to prevent them from committing road traffic offences,” it said.

Earlier, the operation was led by JPJ Sarawak Operations Unit head, Mohd Ismail Omar, and involved 35 personnel from the Enforcement Division.

Throughout the operation, 1,057 vehicles were inspected, resulting in 270 notices issued for various offences, while 12 vehicles were also seized.

Enforcement officers on duty inspect the vehicles during the operation.
