KUCHING: The Sessions Court here sentenced an unemployed man to six years in prison and two lashes of the cane for robbing a convenience store in Padawan earlier this month.
Mohd Amirulnizam Naruddin, 25, pleaded guilty before Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman to a charge under Section 395 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 397 and Section 34 of the same Code.
The incident took place around 3.10 am on April 5, when Amirulnizam and two accomplices – who are still at large – stormed a 24-hour convenience store at Mile 10, Padawan, armed with a machete.
An 18-year-old girl, who was working as a part-time shop assistant, later lodged a police report and the estimated losses amounted to RM500.
Acting on a tip-off and CCTV footage showing a helmet worn by one of the suspects, police managed to track down and arrest Amirulnizam.
Police also seized a pair of shoes, trousers and a machete used in the robbery, all of which were identified by both the victim and a witness.
Amirulnizam was further identified during a police line-up.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Fadzri Azham Zainudin prosecuted the case, while Amirulnizam was unrepresented by counsel.
