KUCHING: An unemployed man was sentenced to a fine of RM2,000 in default of six months’ imprisonment by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday for stealing a 1.74-metre cable which belonged to Telekom Malaysia Berhad, last October 2.
Muhammad Ryann Hidayat Abdullah, 22, pleaded guilty to a charge that was read out by an interpreter before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan.
According to the charge, he and another person who is still at large, committed the offence at Jalan Reservoir, around 4.30 pm, on October 2.
Therefore, they were charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same code, which carries a jail term of up to seven years or a fine or both, upon conviction.
Based on the facts of the case, the complainant, who is a policeman, was with his team carrying out an integrated ‘Op Bersepadu’ crime prevention patrol and came across two suspicious looking men along Jalan Reservoir.
While approaching the two individuals, the complainant and his team found that they were stealing cables. The accused was successfully arrested while the other suspect managed to escape.
They seized several items used for theft such as cable cutters, pulling ropes, iron rods, modified cable cutters, and two motorcycles, among others.
As a result of the investigation, the accused and his accomplice, who is still at large, stole a 1.74- metre cable which belongs to Telekom Malaysia Berhad.
Prosecuting Officer Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang requested the court to impose a deterrent sentence as a lesson to Muhammad Ryann.
