KUCHING: An unemployed man was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment by the Magistrate’s Court here today (Jan 23) after pleading guilty to threatening to injure his mother and burn down their house following a dispute over money.
Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali imposed the sentence on Noor Halifah Jonian, 39, from Malihah, Matang, after he admitted to a charge of criminal intimidation under Section 506 of the Penal Code.
According to the charge, Noor Halifah threatened to injure his 63-year-old mother at their home in Taman Malihah at about 9.00 pm last Saturday (Jan 18).
Based on the facts of the case, the incident occurred after the accused demanded RM50 from his mother, who was unable to give him the money as she had none.
The accused later attempted to start his motorcycle but failed due to a battery problem, which further angered him.
He then went on a rampage, punching a refrigerator and uttering threats to kill close family members, including his mother, and to set the house on fire.
A police report was lodged following the incident, leading to his arrest on the same day.
The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor, Muhammad Afiq Safly Nor Kazly, while the accused was unrepresented.
