KUCHING: Two Unesco Creative Cities of Gastronomy are deepening international collaboration through the universal language of food, using gastronomy as a platform to promote cultural understanding and goodwill.
The Saudi Culinary Arts Commission, led by Majid Almuhanna, paid a courtesy call on Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng on Monday (Jan 26) as part of efforts to enhance culinary collaboration between Kuching and Madinah.
The meeting highlighted the shared recognition of both Madinah and Kuching as members of the Unesco Creative Cities of Gastronomy network, reflecting their rich culinary heritage, strong food culture and commitment to promoting gastronomy as a platform for cultural exchange and sustainable development.
During the meeting, discussions focused on collaborative initiatives in culinary diplomacy, knowledge sharing and cultural appreciation.
Among the key proposals was a chef exchange programme aimed at fostering professional development, cross-cultural learning and the international promotion of traditional cuisines from both cities.
Additionally, discussions were held on the development of a joint publication titled ‘Kuching–Madinah: A Cross-Cultural Culinary Journey’.
The book is expected to document the culinary narratives, heritage and food traditions of both cities, serving as a cultural bridge that celebrates diversity, history and shared values through gastronomy.
Wee welcomed the delegation and lauded the initiative, noting that gastronomy is a powerful medium to strengthen international friendship, promote cultural understanding and further elevate Kuching’s standing as a Unesco Creative City of Gastronomy.
He also reaffirmed MBKS’ commitment to supporting meaningful partnerships that contribute to cultural sustainability and global engagement.
