LUNDU: The nomination of Gunung Pueh as Sarawak’s first United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Biosphere Reserve Site through the Sarawak Forestry Department is not solely based on its scenic beauty.
According to Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang, the nomination also highlights Gunung Pueh’s connection between humans and nature, where conservation and socio-economic development can coexist.
“Meanwhile, the World Network of Biosphere Reserves is a global initiative under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme.
“It aims to conserve biodiversity while promoting sustainable development,” he said during the official launch of the Communication, Educational and Public Awareness (CEPA) for the UNESCO Biosphere Site 2025 at Kampung Pasir Hulu here on Thursday.
Billy added that this awareness campaign was held to foster public awareness of environmental conservation initiatives in the Lundu District while also enhancing collaboration between government departments and stakeholders.
“Therefore, I encourage each of you to participate and gain as much knowledge as possible throughout this Awareness Campaign.
“By supporting this Biosphere Reserve nomination, we contribute to global efforts to protect biodiversity, promote sustainable practices, and ensure that the natural beauty and resources of this area are preserved for the future,” he said.
