KUCHING: The Ministry of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development received a courtesy visit from the representative in Malaysia of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Dr Julitta Elizabeth Onabanjo, to discuss key social issues and potential collaboration in Sarawak.

One of the key discussion areas was the ageing population in Sarawak. The ministry has engaged Curtin University, Swinburne University and Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS) to research Sarawak’s ageing profile.

“Their research, God willing, will be completed in June.

“And by October, the results will be known and can be used as a topic of discussion in an international conference where we can collaborate,” said Fatimah.

Dr Julitta welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with Sarawak to ensure women and young people could contribute actively to the growth and development of the state.

“We continue to commit to Sarawak and to the ministry to continue to working hand-in-hand to ensure that every person, every woman, every young person in Sarawak fulfils his/her potential, ambition and contributes to the development of this beautiful Sarawak,” she said.

Fatimah also said there were many opportunities for collaboration, with valuable support from experienced partners who could share best practices from developed countries.

“There are a lot of areas that we can collaborate on. They can help us based on their experiences and also the best practices carried out in developed countries before us,” she added.

Dr Julitta reaffirmed UNFPA’s dedication to working closely with the Sarawak government to address these critical issues.

“On behalf of the UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, we do want to thank you and we will continue looking for areas to work together,” she said.

The meeting marked a significant step in strengthening partnerships between Sarawak and UNFPA, ensuring that policies and initiatives aligned with best practices to benefit the people of Sarawak.
