Unidentified man killed in Pan Borneo Highway hit-and-run

MIRI: Police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run after an unidentified man was struck and killed along KM826.9 of the Pan Borneo Highway on Sunday afternoon.

District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Abdullah said officers received a report at 4.40 pm on Oct 19 following the discovery of the body by the roadside near the Miri–Bintulu stretch.

Initial investigations found that the victim, believed to be in his 40s or 50s, was walking along the highway when he was hit from behind by an unidentified vehicle.

The driver reportedly did not stop.

A medical officer from Ladang Tiga Health Clinic pronounced the man dead at the scene at 4.05 pm.

The man was last seen by members of the public on Oct 16 near Kampung Subis 1, about five kilometres from the crash site. Witnesses said he was walking alone, wearing only a pair of shorts and no shirt.

Police described the victim as slightly heavy-set, with no visible tattoos or distinctive marks. His identity remains unknown.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Police are also appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact Investigating Officer Inspector Mohammad Amiruddin Hamdan at 018-9529957 or 085-433400, or to report to the nearest police station.

Meanwhile, motorists are urged to drive responsibly and remain alert, especially along stretches of highway frequented by pedestrians, to prevent further tragedies.
