KUCHING: Badan Budaya Unimas (Bayu), a cultural body consisting of 20 students from University Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), has been selected to represent Malaysia at the prestigious Festival De Confolens in France.

From July 27 to Aug 16, this international event will showcase Sarawak’s diverse heritage and artistic traditions.

Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah announced the opportunity during a media session here on Tuesday (July 25).

“Bayu, comprising talented students from various faculties at Unimas, including engineering, sciences, arts, economics, and computer science, will serve as cultural ambassadors, reflecting Malaysia’s commitment to preserving and promoting its rich cultural heritage,” he said.

Abdul Karim highlighted the ministry’s long-standing dedication to supporting the arts and preserving cultural heritage.

Through the Sarawak Heritage, Arts, and Culture Easy Grant under the Cultural and Heritage Section, the ministry provided financial support to Bayu, enabling their participation in the esteemed Festival De Confolens.

“The Festival De Confolens will offer a unique platform for Bayu to showcase Sarawak’s traditional dances, costumes, and music, celebrating the state’s diverse ethnicities and their unique heritage.

“This exposure not only highlights Malaysia’s cultural wealth but also fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation of Sarawak’s identity.”

He stressed the importance of responsible and transparent fund utilisation, expecting Bayu to provide a comprehensive report after the festival to ensure accountability and optimise future initiatives.
