UNIMAS honours 1,037 graduates on final day of convocation

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) celebrated a total of 1,037 graduates from three faculties on the final day of its 29th Convocation ceremony today.

The seventh session, which began at 8:00 am, was officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who also serves as the university’s pro-chancellor.

It saw 212 graduates from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and 328 graduates from the Faculty of Engineering receiving their scrolls.

In his speech, Uggah said the graduates had an important role to play as Sarawak entered a phase of rapid transformation driven by confidence, ambition, and openness to talent.

“Sarawak’s future is bright, and so is yours. You graduate at a time of unprecedented momentum. Use this moment to help shape the Sarawak of 2030 and beyond,” he added.

During the ceremony, Uggah presented five categories of awards to nine outstanding graduates from the Faculty of Engineering.

These included the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) Academic Excellence Award, Yayasan Haji Suaidi and Hajah Hakimah Academic Excellence Award (four recipients), Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Award (one recipient), JPG Consultant Award (two recipients), and The Grace of Resilience Award (one recipient).

Also present was Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who presented awards to five top graduates from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

The recipients were recognised under the following categories: Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) Sarawak Gold Medal Award for Best Medical Doctor 2025, Kenyalang Medical Foundation Excellence Award for Best Student in Paediatrics (Year 5), Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr Sulaiman Haji Daud Award for Excellence in Surgery, Puan Sri Datin Amar Naimah Haji Hasbi Award for Excellence in Medicine, and Hajah Halimah Haji Sulaiman Award for Excellence in Nursing.

In the afternoon session, officiated by UNIMAS’ Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit, 497 graduates from the Faculty of Cognitive Sciences and Human Development received their scrolls.

The eighth session also marked the closing of the university’s 29th convocation ceremony.

The four-day convocation, which began on November 3, celebrated a total of 4,100 graduates across various levels of study, from Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master’s degrees to Bachelor’s degrees and Postgraduate Diplomas in Education.
