UNIMAS Institute of Borneo Studies holds open house

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Institute of Borneo Studies of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) is expected to be a reference centre to the world for the collection of heritage, histories and treasures in the Borneo region.

Established in 1997, the university believed that all information about Borneo must be preserved and protected for the future generation references.

“Sarawak – which is in the region of Borneo – is unique and rich not only for its flora and fauna, but also its ethnics, cultures and histories – in which other places don’t have.

“We hope that this Institute of Borneo Studies, will continue to become one of the world research centre, especially involving Borneo region, and be an authority to informational requirements relating to Borneo,” said UNIMAS Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs And Alumni) Prof Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman at Institute of Borneo Studies open house closing ceremony yesterday.

He added UNIMAS will continue to support the institute in their effort to highlight the institute as a world research centre. Meanwhile, the two-day open house programme held from September 19 to 20 aimed to provide researchers and the public with innovative activities provided by UNIMAS.

The event also provided access to facilities at UNIMAS and offered prospects for collaborative activities related to the academic, industry, government and society.

Various activities were held including exhibition of ‘Kerusi Dayak’, ‘Kerusi Nusantara’, ‘Kerusi Tun Taib’ and ‘Kerusi Sino-Borneo’. There are also exhibition from other UNIMAS departments, Sarawak State Library, Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) and Statistics Department.

The Institute of Borneo Studies was formerly known as the Institute of East Asia Studies (IEAS).
