KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) has launched a new mobile application, UNIMAS Perihatin, aimed at enhancing the safety and welfare of students with disabilities (OKU) on campus.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit said the initiative, introduced by the university’s Chief Digital Office, would allow OKU students to seek immediate help in times of emergency.
“The app is equipped with an SOS function which alerts campus security and the university’s health centre for immediate action.
“It is also linked to a buddy system, where fellow students assigned to them will be notified if assistance is needed.
“If the SOS is activated, the app will also produce an alarm or sound alert to draw attention from people nearby,” he told reporters after the 2025/26 Student Pledge Ceremony at Arena Gemilang, DeTAR Putra, today.
He added that 62 existing OKU students and about 30 new students would be the first to benefit from the system.
Ahmad Hata stressed that the initiative reflects UNIMAS’ principle of equity, where support is prioritised for those who need it most.
“Currently, it is focused on OKU students, but we are also considering extending the app to other areas of concern such as cases of sexual harassment or bullying, should the need arise,” he explained.
The Vice-Chancellor also said the university may explore expanding the app beyond campus use.
“If proven effective, other universities or even agencies may adopt the system.
“We hope it can eventually benefit more people with disabilities outside the university who also require urgent assistance,” he said.
Earlier in his speech, Ahmad Hata stated that aside from the SOS function, the app also features a ‘Get Help’ button, allowing users to quickly contact campus security or designated frontliners for non-critical assistance.
“In addition, the app provides a ‘Danger Area Reminder and Safe Route Suggestion’, warning users about hazardous spots such as construction zones or flood-prone areas, while recommending safer alternative routes,” he said.
