SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) made history at its 29th Convocation by becoming the first public university in Malaysia to fully integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its convocation management system.
In its statement issued today, UNIMAS said this milestone marked the official launch of StageAI, an intelligent event management platform developed in line with UNIMAS’ Digital Transformation agenda.
StageAI revolutionises the traditional convocation experience through a suite of cutting-edge technologies, including AI Voice Technology for flawless pronunciation of graduate names with phonetic precision and consistency.
“Facial Recognition System for real-time identity verification, ensuring seamless scroll presentation. IoT Sensor Integration for efficient event flow and coordination,” it said.
UNIMAS added that the StageAI was successfully piloted during the 28th Convocation Ceremony in 2024 and the Excellence Award Ceremony (MAGU) in 2025 before its full implementation this year.
“The system has significantly enhanced operational efficiency, reducing audio preparation time from one month to just two days, and minimising workforce requirements from 16 to six personnel.
“Developed by the Tun Abang Haji Openg Digital Centre (TAHODC), StageAI reflects UNIMAS’ commitment to innovation, smart campus culture and future-ready talent development.
“This achievement not only sets a new benchmark in convocation ceremony organisation but also reinforces UNIMAS’ leadership in digital transformation within Malaysia’s higher education landscape,” it said.
