KUCHING: Sarawak Foreigners Health Information System (SAFHIS) is proud to support Universiti Malaysia Sarawak’s (UNIMAS) “From Ethics to Evidence: Mastering Medicolegal Challenges in 2025” programme held on February 18.

SAFHIS sponsored 50 final-year medical students from UNIMAS’ Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FPSK), enabling them to participate alongside experienced doctors and medical professionals.

“The programme provided participants with an overview of the legal framework that governs medical practice, covering essential topics such as key legislation, regulations, and bioethical principles,” according to SAFHIS through a press statement on Thursday.

“Special attention was given to informed consent, clinical negligence, and ethical considerations in medical research.

“The course also explored the implications of failing to obtain informed consent. It provided insights into clinical negligence – crucial areas of medical practices that are often complex and evolving,” it said.

SAFHIS’ involvement in this programme aimed to foster a deeper understanding of the intersections between law, ethics, and medical practice, which are essential in preparing future healthcare professionals for the challenges they may face in their careers.

Such insights are crucial toward ensuring a high standard for the medical industry in Sarawak, to which SAFHIS is also contributing as part of the Foreign Workers Transformation Approach (FWTA) that took effect on Jan 15, 2025.

FWTA is a system designed to improve the management and regulation of foreign workers, enhancing transparency, efficiency, and compliance with labour laws while ensuring ethical labour practices and worker welfare.
