UNIMAS mobilises over 100 volunteers for flood relief

SAMARAHAN: More than 100 medical professionals and volunteers from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) have been mobilised to help in the flood disaster relief operations in Sarawak.

UNIMAS vice-chancellor, Professor Dr. Ahmad Hata Rasit, said all participants were mobilised to assist in health screenings at Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) and post-flood cleaning activities.

“Through UNIMAS’ teaching hospital, we sent two teams of 10 members each to Bintulu for health screenings of flood victims at PPS.

“As for the volunteer teams, UNIMAS students have also been doing post-flood cleaning in the Lundu areas in Kuching and also around Samarahan,” he said to reporters at the the UNIMAS Integrity Mandate 2025 today (Feb 6) held at the Arena Gemilang DeTAR Putra, UNIMAS here.

Regarding the health screening teams, Hata said the service is conducted in collaboration with the Sarawak State Health Department.

Additionally, a mobile clinic has been deployed in Bintulu, the most severely affected area.

For post-flood cleanup efforts, students from the university’s rescue corps, along with relevant committees, have been actively involved.

“We have deployed two buses, accommodating about 100 individuals, to various villages. Hopefully, this initiative will help alleviate the burden faced by flood victims,” he added.

For the record, as of Thursday, 10 divisions in Sarawak remain affected by floods, with over 5,000 victims housed in 32 PPS.
