KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) has set a new benchmark in digital education by becoming the first university in Malaysia to offer the internationally recognised Google Certified Educators (GCE) training for Levels 1 and 2.

Held from April 14 to 16, the certification programme is part of the Google for Education initiative and was organised through the university’s Chief Digital Officer’s Office in collaboration with Google.

“The initiative aims to empower educators by enhancing their mastery of Google tools, thereby elevating teaching and learning experiences across the university.

“Participants who successfully passed the examinations received official certification, a testament to their competence in utilising digital tools in educational settings.

“The commitment shown by our academic staff in embracing digital tools is commendable.

“This is an important step forward in preparing our educators for the demands of a digital-first world,” UNIMAS said in its statement

During the closing ceremony, UNIMAS Board of Directors’ Chairman, Tan Sri Datuk Sri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie, presented certificates of completion to academics that successfully passed the certification examinations for Levels 1 and 2.

Also in attendance were Google for Education Country Head for Malaysia and Brunei, Danial Azizan Abdullah Henry, and UNIMAS Chief Digital Officer, Professor Dr Wan Hashim Wan Ibrahim.

The GCE programme provides educators with internationally accredited credentials, opening doors to a broader professional network through platforms such as the Google Educator Groups (GEGs).

It also equips them with practical digital skills and innovative pedagogical approaches for the modern classroom.

UNIMAS encourages educators across Malaysia to explore the potential of digital transformation in education, and remains committed to fostering a culture of continuous digital learning.
