KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) has given its assurance to strengthen campus safety measures and extend appropriate assistance to the family of the victims involved in a tragic accident at UNIMAS lake yesterday.

The incident involved a vehicle that veered off the road and plunged into the lake within the campus grounds, carrying two civilians — a mother and her daughter.

According to a statement from the university’s Corporate Communications Division, both victims were swiftly rescued from the vehicle by UNIMAS security personnel with help from members of the public who were nearby.

The rescue operation was carried out in coordination with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), and the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM).

Medical attention was administered at the UNIMAS Health Centre (PKU), where the daughter was found to be in stable condition, however, the mother was later pronounced dead and her body was sent to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

“UNIMAS extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and urges everyone to respect the privacy of the grieving family.

“The university will continue to provide the necessary support and assistance during this difficult time,” the statement read.

UNIMAS also expressed appreciation to its staff and campus community members who acted promptly and bravely during the rescue efforts.

“Their swift and courageous actions reflect the core values of UNIMAS — compassion, resilience, volunteerism, and a shared commitment to collective well-being,” it added.
