SAMARAHAN: A total of 600 trees were planted at various locations around Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) as part of a joint commitment between Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) and UNIMAS.
The tree-planting project was held today with the aim to support climate action by fostering a greener and more sustainable environment.
Now in its third year, the project saw the participation of over 100 students from the Faculty of Engineering, along with 50 SEB staff and 13 personnel from UNIMAS Publisher, with support from the UNIMAS Development Office.
According to Project Coordinator, Dr Mahshuri Yusof, the initiative aligns with UNIMAS’ goal to achieve low carbon campus status by 2030.
“We are truly grateful for the support from SEB, especially in providing the trees for this programme.
“To date, SEB has contributed 2,100 trees for planting within UNIMAS, with an additional 130 trees planted at Kampung Pinggan Jaya, Samarahan,” she said.
UNIMAS Publisher also took part in the programme to demonstrate its commitment to a pledge made in 2023 – to plant one tree for every book published.
The first trees under this pledge were planted in 2024, marking the beginning of an ongoing environmental effort.
Also present during the symbolic tree handover was Dr John Kiu Miin Fung, SEB’s Manager for Research Support and Commercialisation.
Kiu noted that the initiative is part of SEB’s broader contribution to the Greening Malaysia Programme, which aims to plant and protect 500,000.
