KUCHING: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) has once again strengthened its global presence by placing in the 101–200 tier in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2025.

The rankings, which measure universities’ contributions towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), mark a significant leap for UNIMAS, from the 401–600 bracket in 2023 to 301–400 in 2024, before achieving its current standing.

“This continuous rise reflects UNIMAS’ ability to synchronise institutional strategies with the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations,” UNIMAS said in a recent statement.

UNIMAS added that the achievement was the result of an evidence-based approach, structured monitoring, and emphasis on sustainable impact in research, teaching and community engagement.

The university emerged as a global leader in Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 17: Partnership for the Goals, securing the 16th spot worldwide a recognition of its excellence in forging strategic collaborations across sectors and borders.

“Our position under SDG 17 highlights our strength in cross-sectoral partnerships and international cooperation, which is key to advancing the university’s global mission,” UNIMAS added.

The university also ranked 36th globally in SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, demonstrating its commitment to transparent governance and institutional integrity.

“Integrity, good governance, and transparency remain the cornerstone of our institutional framework,” it said.

Additionally, UNIMAS achieved 81st position in SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy and 94th in SDG 2: Zero Hunger, recognising impactful research and community initiatives in addressing energy and food security challenges.

“Our researchers and community teams continue to deliver solutions that directly address pressing local and global issues,” it stated.

Consistent performance was also recorded in SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 15 (Life on Land) all within the 101–200 range, highlighting the university’s dedication to environmental sustainability and biodiversity preservation.

“The university’s progress in these rankings is a testament to its strategic direction, visionary leadership and the institutional embedding of sustainable values,” UNIMAS added.

UNIMAS’ rising global recognition reaffirms its role as a transformative institution in the region, committed to long-term, sustainable impact.
