KOTA SAMARAHAN: A Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) student has received the Life Saver Award for rescuing a drowning victim at UNIMAS Lake, earning him the title of campus hero and a source of inspiration for the community.
Ahmad Nur Irfan Amirruddin, a Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities student and Cadet Officer of the Civil Defence Student Corps (SISPA) UNIMAS, was presented with the award in a ceremony organised by the Muara Tuang Service Centre on Friday (Aug 8).
The award was handed over by Deputy State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Datuk Idris Buang.
The incident took place on July 21, when Nur Irfan, who happened to be at the scene, immediately jumped into the lake upon noticing an individual struggling to stay afloat.
Drawing on his training and skills as a SISPA cadet officer, he successfully brought the victim to shore despite challenging conditions.
Idris, who is also Muara Tuang assemblyman, praised Nur Irfan’s courage and composure, saying it reflected a strong humanitarian spirit worth emulating.
“Congratulations to Nur Irfan, who not only saved a life but also inspired the community, especially the people of Samarahan.
‘Such bravery is a value that should continue to be nurtured among the younger generation,” said Idris.
He also expressed condolences to the victim’s family and extended appreciation to all involved in the rescue, stressing that such compassion and civic-mindedness are essential for collective well-being.
