KUCHING: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) has expressed full support for Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir’s call to ease registration procedures for new students affected by recent floods in Sabah and parts of Sarawak.

UNIMAS said the measure includes allowing affected students to register without immediate fee payment.

Students will be able to settle their fees once they receive scholarships or study loans after the semester begins.

In addition, the university is offering financial assistance to undergraduates facing difficulties in paying registration fees.

Applications for assistance can be made through the Student Welfare Section (SyKeP) at the UNIMAS Student Service Centre via 082-581939/1927/1211/1946 or email at ukem_official@unimas.my.

The university also extended its sympathy to flood victims in Sabah and Sarawak, praying for their strength and resilience in facing the disaster.

“As an institution that prioritises the welfare of its community, UNIMAS will continue to stand with students in every situation and remains committed to ensuring they can register and begin their studies for the 2024/2025 session smoothly,” it said in a statement posted on its Facebook.

Previously, Dr Zambry has instructed all public Institutions of Higher Learning (IHLs) to provide registration flexibility for students affected by the floods in Sabah and Sarawak.

He said universities would offer adequate assistance and leeway to ensure no students are deprived of the opportunity to continue their studies.

Zambry added that the Malaysian University Student Volunteer Council, along with volunteer teams from the IHLs, will be mobilised to aid in post-flood recovery.
