KOTA SAMARAHAN: The construction of the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Teaching Hospital Phase 2 is progressing smoothly, with 66.17 per cent completion recorded and the project currently three days ahead of schedule.

The RM485.99 million project, located at the UNIMAS campus here, is being implemented through a design-and-build concept by Perbena Emas Sdn Bhd, with the Public Works Department (PWD) Malaysia Special Project Team 2 acting as the implementing agency.

Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the hospital is expected to be completed by Nov 12, 2026 and will play a significant role in supporting the teaching and learning ecosystem for UNIMAS’ medicine and health sciences programmes.

“Once completed, the hospital will also benefit residents in Samarahan, Kuching, Serian, and Sri Aman by providing access to quality healthcare facilities,” he said during a site visit to the UNIMAS Prima Health Centre today (Sept 6).

The project consists of two phases. Phase 1, completed and handed over to the Ministry of Higher Education on June 13, 2024, includes the Prima Health Centre (PKP), which operates as a daily healthcare facility for non-critical cases.

The PKP is equipped with an X-ray room, cough clinic, eye clinic, senior citizens’ clinic, medical laboratory, and public health examination room, along with supporting facilities such as a surau, creche, cafeteria, guardhouse, mechanical and electrical building, and an elevated water tank.

Phase 2, which involves constructing the main teaching hospital building, will house 300 beds and is currently the largest project managed by PWD’s Special Project Team for Sabah and Sarawak.

Ahmad said the WorksMinistry, through PWD, will continue to monitor the project closely through regular engagement sessions and inspections to ensure it is completed on time, within budget, and up to quality standards.

“This approach reflects the principles of Malaysia MADANI, which focus on empathy and care for the needs of the people while ensuring timely access to quality healthcare,” he said.

Ahmad also shared an update on the Petra Jaya Hospital project, which has achieved 81.6 per cent completion and is one day ahead of schedule.

“The RM410 million Petra Jaya Hospital, visited earlier by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, is expected to be completed by Feb 23, 2026,” he said.

With both projects progressing well, Ahmad said the community in Kuching and nearby areas will soon benefit from two new high-quality healthcare facilities under the Health Ministry.
