MIRI: More than 700 people gathered at Boulevard Shopping Mall here to celebrate “KEKNYALANG”, a charitable event held in conjunction with Sarawak Day.

The event featured a multicultural cake-sharing initiative, the first of its kind in Sarawak.

Organised by Persatuan Prihatin Masyarakat Miri (PPMM), the programme on Tuesday (July 22) was officiated by Deputy Minister for Tourism, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, who is also the Piasau assemblyman, representing Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

In his speech, Ting praised the caring spirit of Miri residents, describing the city as a city full of love and called on more people to come forward as volunteers.

“Giving is a form of happiness. Every act of helping others brings joy and personal fulfillment.”

He also stressed the importance of youth in driving Sarawak’s future.

“Sarawak needs brave youth to step forward, serve the community, and spread positive energy. Those who give without expecting anything in return should be appreciated and given room to grow.”

The “KEKNYALANG” programme set its own record by gathering a total of 503 cakes donated by sponsors from within and outside the state, including Peninsular Malaysia, Brunei, Kuching, Sibu and Bintulu.

Around 200 individuals from special groups were also celebrated along with their families.

Also present at the event was Miri City mayor and Pujut assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang.
