MIRI: The Minister for Transport of Sarawak and Senadin Assemblyman, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, has called for unity and a focus on development, urging the public to avoid political distractions that could hinder progress.

Speaking on Tuesday during the presentation of Minor Rural Project (MRP) grants for the Senadin constituency, Lee disclosed that RM257,000 had been distributed among 30 associations and organisations.

He outlined several significant infrastructure projects to transform the city.

Among the developments highlighted was the long-awaited Kuala Baram River Mouth channel project, which is now under construction.

“This project is a game-changer for Miri,” said Lee. “Once completed, it will pave the way for a deep-sea port, bringing tremendous opportunities and marking the next transformation for the city. Our vision is to see Miri evolve into a port city with a new satellite town.”

He also noted progress on upgrading the Miri Airport terminal, which received on-the-spot approval from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during his recent visit to Sarawak.

Construction is expected to commence soon.

Lee also addressed the ongoing traffic congestion at Sungai Tujuh, the key border crossing between Miri and Brunei.

The Sarawak government has initiated temporary renovations, with tenders already called for additional lanes. Looking ahead, he proposed a major upgrade to the crossing, aiming to include it in Malaysia’s 13th Development Plan to ensure smoother traffic flow.

Another ambitious proposal involves constructing a bridge across the Miri River at Pulau Melayu. This would create an alternative route, reducing congestion along the Pujut-Lutong Road and enhancing connectivity from Lutong to Luak Bay and the airport.

Several roads in Miri are set to be upgraded to dual carriageways.

These include the road from Pujut Corner to Jalan Padang Kerbau, the route linking Borneo Medical Centre to the hospital, and the road to Canada Hill, which will accommodate tour buses and improve accessibility.

Lee emphasized the importance of staying united and prioritizing development. “We want Sarawak to be a model region showcasing unity and progress. The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government remains focused on the welfare of the people and the growth of the state,” he said.
