KUCHING: The GongXi Raya 2026 celebration organised by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is more than a festive gathering as it sends a clear and powerful message that unity among the people is non-negotiable.

Its Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the joint Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration reflects the city’s commitment to togetherness despite differences in background, culture and belief.

“We gather as one family, forged from many backgrounds, many traditions, many beliefs, yet bound by a single purpose. And that is the spirit of GongXi Raya.

“This event is not just a celebration. It is a statement. It is a declaration of who we are as a people.

“In a world that too often draws lines between us, we choose to erase them. In a time where others divide, we choose to unite.

“Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Aidilfitri, side by side, not as separate occasions, but as one shared celebration. That is not just symbolic. That is powerful,” he said while speaking during the event held at MBKS lobby here today.

Wee noted that unity must be upheld, especially in challenging times, pointing to global uncertainties and rising costs that affect everyday lives.

He stressed that while the celebration brings joy, it also serves as a reminder for council staff to remain prepared in facing future challenges by strengthening trust and solidarity within the community.

“There were moments in our past, in this country, when unity was tested. Moments when misunderstandings threatened to pull us apart. Moments when fear spoke louder than reason.

“But Sarawak, and Kuching in particular, has always chosen a different path.

“We chose respect over suspicion, understanding over anger and we sit at the same table, to celebrate each other’s festivals, to stand together not only in times of joy, but also in times of difficulty,” he added.

He said the GongXi Raya celebration not only reflects prudent spending through combined festivities, but also reinforces a shared commitment to unity regardless of external challenges.
