KUCHING: Unity among the people of Sarawak is a key foundation for advancing the state’s development agenda, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He stressed the need to safeguard this unity, noting that progress often draws envy from certain quarters who are uneasy with the success of others.

“What’s important is that we maintain unity. When we make progress, there will be those who become jealous; that is human nature. Some may not want to see others grow and will work to ensure we fail.

“Now there are various claims suggesting there is tension within Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS). If we are divided, what can we build?

“That is why we must protect Sarawak, prioritise Sarawak, and serve the people,” he said during the launch of the Nanga Lasi Bridge in Julau today.

Abang Johari added that without unity, leaders would not be able to focus on the people’s needs.

“Fortunately, GPS remains stable. My colleagues and I can focus on using our knowledge and experience to boost Sarawak’s income. Today, the world is watching our state.

“For example, on Friday, I received a courtesy visit from a delegation from Saudi Arabia, which is developing the USD8.4 billion NEOM Green Hydrogen Project.

“The project is managed by ACWA Power, which is also interested in Sarawak’s capabilities in the energy sector.

“ACWA’s chairman himself came to meet me because he knows we have strengths in energy,” he said.

Abang Johari pointed out that Sarawak’s growing international recognition makes it all the more important to preserve unity.

“Therefore, the people, including Nanga Lasi residents, should take pride in the state’s achievements as the world is watching us,” he said.
