BINTULU: The local residents have been called to stand united in spirit following the recent floods that struck the area here.
Tanjung Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang said for the past few days, the town of Bintulu faced an unprecedented floods, something one never imagined would happen.
“The past 48 hours have been heartbreaking as we see many of our neighbours, friends, and loved ones struggling with the aftermath.
“We have seen families lose their homes, businesses suffer damage, and daily life comes to a halt. Many of the very people who were supposed to celebrate with us tonight are now facing uncertainty and hardship. Our hearts go out to them.
“Yet, in times of hardship, one thing always shines through – the strength of our community,” he said.
He said during the Chinese New Year gathering organised by Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bintulu branch at Dinner World Restaurant here on Saturday.
The event was also attended by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Pang, who is also the SUPP Bintulu Branch chairman said out of respect for those affected, certain celebrations have been cancelled and only limited performances.
“Instead of a typical New Year gathering, today is about solidarity, about standing together as one in the face of adversity,” he said.
Later, he also announced a donation of RM100,000 to the Bintulu Divisional Disaster Management Committee in the effort to aid flood victims.
