THE Bintulu District Police Headquarters (IPD) needs to be upgraded to Grade A to ensure a stronger police presence on the ground to tackle crime, maintain public order, and support the growing demands of a developing division.

According to Tanjung Batu Assemblyman, Johnny Pang Leong Ming, the Bintulu IPD has remained at Grade B since 1993.

Since then, Bintulu has grown rapidly to become one of the fastest-developing divisions in Sarawak, driven by heavy industry, port activities, and rapid urbanization.

However, he said, the strength and capability of the police force have not kept pace with this growth.

“Recently, we have also seen a rise in social issues, particularly involving drugs and online gambling.

“These are not petty offenses; they are gateways to more serious crimes.

“In fact, we have already seen the consequences, with alarming cases of serious injuries and even loss of life occurring in the community,” he said.

He said when debating in support of the motion of appreciation to the Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar’s speech in the august House today.

Therefore, Johnny urged the government to upgrade the Bintulu IPD to protect the people and provide law enforcement with the necessary tools.

“With more VIP visits, foreign investments, and tourists coming into Bintulu, public safety must be a top priority.

“Let us not wait for more incidents to happen before taking action. The safety of the rakyat cannot be delayed,” he said.
