MIRI: Miri Airport is set for a major transformation as extensive upgrading works, spearheaded by Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), are now in full swing.

Several key enhancements are already underway, aimed at improving passenger comfort, accessibility, and safety.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the ongoing works include the refurbishment of public toilets, replacement of escalators, upgrading of the air-conditioning system, repair of Apron Bay 1, and the installation of a new aerobridge.

“Miri Airport, which has handled over two million passengers annually since 2013, is showing signs of wear due to its more than two decades of service.

“These upgrading works are critical to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for all users,” he said after chairing a meeting at the Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) Meeting Room on Friday.

He added several components of the project have already commenced, with completion expected between July 2025 and February 2026.

To further ease the passenger experience during the construction phase, Lee proposed that MAHB install clear signage and provide temporary facilities, especially to accommodate senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs).

During the meeting, Lee also tabled several long-term proposals for MAHB’s consideration, including the construction of a dedicated business jet terminal, a new cargo terminal, and the repainting of the airport terminal building.

He also revealed that a preliminary design study for a new terminal is currently being undertaken and is scheduled for completion by November 2025.

“I am pleased that all our requests are being acted upon and I am highly satisfied with the progress made thus far.

“These upgrades will not only improve current facilities but also pave the way for the future development of a larger airport.

“This will further position Miri as a strategic transportation and investment hub in the Borneo region,” he said.
