KUCHING: The upgraded Estate Disaster Command Centre, funded with RM750,000 by the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), is expected to significantly enhance Sarawak’s disaster response capabilities.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the facility, now fully operational, is equipped with more advanced and modern technology to strengthen coordination efforts in managing disasters across the state.

“With the completion of this upgraded Estate Disaster Command Centre, we will be more effective in managing any disasters that may occur throughout Sarawak,” he said during a press conference after chairing the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) meeting at Wisma Bapa Malaysia today.

Uggah added that the centre will also function as a central hub for accurate and verified information dissemination, helping to curb the spread of misinformation, especially during emergency situations.

He noted that Sarawak is currently experiencing hot and dry weather conditions, increasing the risk of open burning and bushfires.

“We have recently detected eight fire incidents in areas such as Mukah, Betong, Miri and Lawas, but all were successfully brought under control through cooperation among agencies,” he said.

Uggah urged the public to refrain from open burning, particularly in rural and agricultural areas, warning that unattended fires could easily spread under current dry conditions.

He added that district and divisional disaster management committees have been placed on alert to ensure swift action can be taken in the event of any fire outbreak.
