Upgrades to four airports; new one for Lawas

MIRI: A series of upgrading and maintenance projects will be undertaken at four airports in Sarawak, along with the construction of a new airport funded by the state government.

State Minister of Transport, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin who disclosed this gave updates on the progress of these projects after the first Aviation Sub-Committee Sarawak Public Transport Committee meeting (SPTC), here Monday (Feb 24).

“The Bario Airport runway extension is progressing well. Currently, 26 per cent of the work is completed, which is one per cent ahead of schedule. The runway will be extended by 265 metres, bringing its total length to 930 metres,” he stated.

He mentioned that additional approvals are being sought for further works, including the expansion of the parking apron and upgrades to the terminal building.

Another key project is the extension of the Limbang Airport runway to 1,790 metres.

“This initiative, fully funded by the Sarawak government, will also include resurfacing works and improvements to the airport’s lighting system. The project is expected to be tendered out soon,” he said.

Additionally, the Sarawak government is financing the construction of the new Lawas Airport at a new location.

“The tender process for the new Lawas airport is set to commence in June this year,” said Lee.

Meanwhile, Marudi Airport will undergo upgrades under the management of Malaysia Airports Sdn Bhd.

This will include resurfacing of the runway, facility enhancements and improvements to firefighting equipment.

Similarly, Malaysia Airports Sdn Bhd will oversee resurfacing works at Mulu Airport, with the tender process scheduled to commence in the near future.
